The Costa degli Dei and its culinary excellence

The name evokes a paradise overlooking the sea that never disappoints, harking back to the mythical passage of Hercules, of which traces remain in some place names such as Formicoli (from "Forum Herculis").

The Costa degli Dei is the stretch of Calabrian coastline that extends over the Tyrrhenian Sea for about 55 km in the province of Vibo Valentia, from Pizzo Calabro to Nicotera, in a succession of rocks, cliffs and picturesque bays.

Along the coast and in the immediate hinterland, some of the Calabrian agrifood excellences are produced, to be tasted between a dip during the itinerary.

The greedy side of the Costa degli Dei

The territory of the Costa degli Dei is the production area of some Calabrian brand products loved and known all over the world.

Among the most famous and renowned are, His Majesty the PGI Red Onion of Tropea Calabria, the PDO Pecorino del Monte Poro (sheep cheese) and the PAT 'Nduja of Spilinga (Traditional Agri-Food Product), to which are added a series of wines, bitter drinks and distillates typical of the Capo Vaticano area.

The PGI Red Onion of Tropea Calabria, also known as "Red Gold of Calabria", belongs to the species Allium Cepa and can be found in the variants (autochthonous ecotypes) round flat, half bell and elongated, whose collection takes place in different periods. The Red Onion stands out from other onion varieties for its unmistakable sweetness, which allows it to be eaten even raw, in salads.

If the onion is the queen, the PDO Pecorino del Monte Poro is the king of the Vibonese table. It is a cheese produced with sheep's milk, raw and whole, realized from two milkings (one in the morning and one in the evening), to which is added the kid or lamb rennet. The whole it is left to rest for a few days in the appropriate molds, then it is salted dry and left to season for different periods depending on the taste: fresh (from 20 to 60 days), semi-aged (from 2 to 6 months), and seasoned (from 6 to 24 months).

Finally, the 'Nduja of Spilinga, is among the one of the most loved and iconic products of Calabria. Spilinga is the country of production that aspires to the disciplinary, but it is found everywhere in various types. Italy's most famous tasty, hot and spicy pork spread is excellent on fresh bread and bruschetta or as an added ingredient to flavor first courses and soups.

Costa degli Dei: a pristine paradise

The Costa degli Dei is a natural paradise that boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in Southern Italy, with the characteristic villages of mid-coast that overlook it.

Tartufo di Pizzo

Day 1

FVPhotography/Shutterstock

Pizzo

We start from Pizzo, a coastal village perched on the tuff fjord dominated by the Aragonese Castle. Built in the 15th century by Ferdinand I of Aragon, the castle is famous for having hosted the imprisonment and shooting of the King of Naples Gioacchino Murat, brother-in-law of Napoleon Bonaparte, buried in the local Church of San Giorgio. The castle houses the Murattiano Provincial Museum and there is a historical re-enactment of the event. Visiting Pizzo involves a precise ritual: sitting in the square and taste the most famous Calabrian ice cream in the world, the Tartufo di Pizzo.

Among the unmissable beaches, you cannot miss the Piedigrotta Beach, in front of the little homonymous church dug in the tuff, a real gem to visit, and the Marinella below the seafront.

Day 2

Zambrone

The second day along the Costa degli Dei is dedicated to the sea and scuba diving.

Lovers of diving and snorkeling will find their corner of paradise in Zambrone, at the small, secluded bay that, not surprisingly, is known as Paradiso del Sub. We are among the most beautiful coves and cliffs on the coast, where the emerald sea creates breathtaking glimpses among the rocks.

Another place not to be missed? The Michelino Beach, in Parghelia, an uncontaminated gem of this coast.

Day 3

Zungri

The third day hunting for the flavors of the Costa degli Dei takes us inland to the top of Monte Poro.

The excursion starts from the rock site of the Zungri Caves in the homonymous village. Also known as Sbariati Caves, these cavities in the form of a real cave village are one of the most interesting examples of the inhabited Mediterranean cave. Here it is possible to visit the adjoining Museum of Peasant Civilization.

The climb to the variegated top of the mountain and to the panoramic villages that surround it, is perfect for whetting the appetite and earn a coveted taste of PDO Pecorino del Monte Poro (cheese).

Tropea

Day 4

Aliaksandr Antanovich/Shutterstock

Tropea

Stage entirely dedicated to Tropea, among The Most Beautiful Villages in Italy and Blue Flag. Also called the "Pearl of the Tyrrhenian Sea", the small town does not need presentation.

Famous for its postcard-perfect overlook of the Rock of Santa Maria dell'Isola, surrounded by caves, Tropea is the capital of the very sweet PGI Red Onion of Tropea Calabria, a vegetable symbol of the region.

Unmissable a morning of relaxing among the different beaches, starting from the marina at the foot of the sanctuary to the beautiful Rotonda Beach.

After a seafood lunch and, of course, of onion in all its forms (from salty to sweet icings and jams), there is nothing better than a walk through the alleys of the historic center. Many eighteenth-century palaces, from Palazzo Toraldo to the Sedile di Portercole and the small churches, Cathedral in the first place with the Diocesan Civic Museum annexed.

The day can only end with a fiery sunset to be admired at the many panoramic views: once a year (at the end of August) the sun goes right into the crater of Stromboli.

Ricadi

Day 5

Aliaksandr Antanovich/Shutterstock

Ricadi

Continuing south along the Costa degli Dei, we meet the locality of Ricadi.

A glimpse of paradise overlooking the jagged cliffs of Capo Vaticano, one of the steepest points on the Calabrian coast, famous for the well-known local bitter drink production.

These places were chosen by the writer Giuseppe Berto, who moved here as a buen retiro and composed his major works. The writer's house-museum is seat to the summer literary festival "Casa Berto".

Nicotera

Day 6

Natalia Macheda/Shutterstock

Nicotera

The week on the Costa degli Dei ends in Nicotera, on the wide free and equipped beach overlooking the Partuso Rock.

The historic center climbs the hill above, arranging itself among alleys and stairways around the two symbolic buildings: the Castle and the Cathedral. Do not miss the view of the Diocesan Museum of Sacred Art, housed in a valuable 14th-century monumental complex, the Provincial Episcopal Pinacoteca and the Civic Archaeological Museum.

Nicotera was also declared City of the Mediterranean Diet: Ancel Keys' studies on the diet are linked to the city.
