Aragonese Castle

Built in the second half of the fifteenth century by Ferdinand I of Aragon in defense of the Kingdom, the Aragonese Castle, which stands on the western part of the town, is comprised of a solid square body with two cylindrical towers of which the great tower, called Torre Maestra, is originally Angevin (1380). 

Here took place the event that made famous  the city: Joachim Murat, King of Naples and brother of Napoleon, in a final attempt to regain the Kingdom of Naples, landed in the marina of Pizzo on 8 October 1815, and here he was overwhelmed by the population and locked up in the Castle with his men, where he was sentenced to death pronouncing his last famous words: "Behold my chest, not my face". 

The Castle houses the Murat Museum and every year, the Cultural Association "Joachim Murat" stages the evocative historical commemoration of the event.
