The Cipolla Rossa di Tropea Calabria PGI (Red Onion of Tropea Calabria) is a fresh vegetable of  the Allium cepa species, which includes the Round Flat, Half Bell and Elongated native ecotypes.

The production area of the PGI product includes several municipalities spread throughout the provinces of Catanzaro, Cosenza and Vibo Valentia and overlooking the Tyrrhenian coast.

The sprout of the Tropea Red Onion is sown in August, while the harvest period varies according to the type of product: the harvest of the Tonda Piatta takes place between April and May, that of the Half Bell between May and June and that of the Elongated type between June and July.

The PGI Red Onion distributed for consumption is of three varieties: Spring Onion, Fresh-sweet-Onion and Onion for Preserves; the color changes slightly according to the type, the taste is always sweet and tender.  

The fresh PGI product holds fresh for a few days, the braided one for almost a month.

The Red Onion of Tropea is also called "Red Gold of Calabria".
