In the places of the Tropea Onion, the Red Gold of Calabria
Also known as "Red Gold of Calabria", the PGI Red Onion of Tropea is one of the flagships of Calabrian agrifood.
Famous throughout the world for its sweetness and healthy organoleptic properties, the onion is the quintessential symbol of Tropea. Blue Flag also counted among The Most Beautiful Villages in Italy, although its production area is actually very large.
Her Majesty, the Red Onion of Tropea
The PGI Calabria Red Onion of Tropea belongs to the Allium Cepa species and is cultivated in several provinces of Calabria, not only in the Tropea area, from which it takes its name.
Whether it is of the flat round type (April/May), half-bell (May/June) or elongated (June/July), the PGI Red Onion always maintains the unmistakable characteristics of sweetness and tenderness that allow it to be consumed also raw, in salad, as well as an ingredient of special dishes.

It is no coincidence that it is known as the "Red Gold of Calabria": the special palatability and the countless beneficial effects due to the presence of vitamins C and E, selenium, iodine, zinc, iron and magnesium, make it a real elixir of long life.
If on the international market it is a delicacy, on the local one it represents an identity link with the land of production and the dishes of the Calabrian poor cuisine. In both cases, its declinations are endless: from jam to dressing for sauces and ragouts, through the Mediterranean salads.
The places of the Tropea Onion
As mentioned, the PGI Onion of Tropea is not only produced in Tropea, but in a series of centers that, together, constitute the Consortium PGI Red Onion of Tropea Calabria: Tropea, Fiumefreddo Bruzio, Serra d’Aiello, Belmonte Calabro, Falerna, Gizzeria, Curinga, Briatico, Parghelia, Zaccanopoli, Zungri, Spilinga and Joppolo.
