The Wine Roads in Calabria: the routes not to be missed
Calabria is historically the “Land of Wine”. Not surprisingly the ancient Greeks identified it as Enotria (from ôinos, vino) for the abundance of vineyards.
From here ships with wine amphorae traded throughout the Mediterranean until the Middle Ages, as shown by archaeological finds; from here Cassiodoro supplied the Roman warehouses with highly prized grapes and wines.
In modern times the history of Calabrian wine is linked to the popular history of the social winery, a meeting point of unmissable conviviality in every country, where the peasant and domestic work of those who harvested by hand and still vinified in ancient palmenti merged.

Today the Wine Roads in Calabria lead to the origin territories of prestigious PDO and PGI brand labels awarded worldwide. Here, the heirs of that ancient tradition have resumed the cultivation of autochthonous Calabrian vineyards (Gaglioppo, Magliocco, Nerello, Greco, Montonico and their white and black grape variety) working with the latest technologies and attention to the environment.
Thanks to the care and passion of Calabrian wine producers, there are present today, throughout the regional territory, 9 PDO - Controlled Designation of Origin (Bruzio, Terre di Cosenza, Savuto, Scavigna, Lamezia, Bivongi, Greco di Bianco, Sant’Anna di Isola Capo Rizzuto, Melissa, Cirò) and 10 PGI - Regional Geographical Indication (Calabria, Arghillà, Costa Viola, Scilla, Lipuda, Locride, Palizzi, Pellaro, Val di Neto, Valdamato), as well as some traditional Presidia Slow Food wines, such as Moscato wine di Saracena.
Each of these wines releases on the palate the essence of a land with an agricultural and hospitable vocation, to be discovered at the table, sipping it with flavour.
