Journey through the Lametino area, among excellence and branded products

Ready to set off on a food and wine itinerary in and around Lamezia Terme?

A trip through the Lametino is ideal for those who wish to combine wine and olive oil excellences to discovery a lively city and its territory suspended between sea, nature, and antiquity.

Lamezia Terme, the second city in the province of Catanzaro, is the main communication hub in Calabria, home to the international airport and the central station of Sant'Eufemia, from which regional connections to all destinations depart.

Today's city was born from the fusion of three previously autonomous municipalities (Nicastro, which corresponds to the current historic center, Sambiase and Sant'Eufemia), uniting a vast marine and mountain territory with the Plain of Sant'Eufemia, where centuries-old olive trees and vineyards abound, and breeding and cultivation of some local excellences are practiced.

Around the city, in the Monti del Reventino area, a network of towns and villages of ancient commercial, artisanal, food and wine traditions, generates the production pipeline of the Lametino area, a stone's throw from the capital.

Lametan excellence and branded products

We are in an area of excellence in the wine and olive sector.

In fact, Lamezia Terme and its surroundings produce the prestigious PDO Lametia Oil, the PDO Lamezia wine and all types of PGI Calabria wines, as well as an increasing production of award-winning craft beers.

The Lametia PDO Extra Virgin Olive Oil is made from the fruits of the Carolea variety, which grows around the Plain of Lamezia Terme. The regulations provide that the olives are harvested directly from the plant, from ripening until mid-January. The oil, perfect as a condiment for Calabrian and Mediterranean dishes, varies in color from green to pale yellow, with a slightly fruity aroma and a delicate flavor.

The PDO Lamezia wine includes all types (white, red, rosé, sparkling, passito and novello) and is the result of autochthonous vines that extend over the surrounding hills to the Catanzaro area. The organoleptic characteristics of this PDO vary depending on the type and individual sub-indications.

Oil and wine are the subject of tastings and guided tours in the wineries and oil mills of the area, which also offer hospitality and events by reservation.

The PGI Red Onion of Tropea Calabria is also found in this stretch of the Tyrrhenian coast, particularly from Lamezia to Nocera Terinese, in all the autochthonous variants (flat round, half bell and elongated). Known as the "Red Gold of Calabria", the PGI onion is distinguished by its unmistakable sweetness.
