Discovering the PGI wines of the Costa Viola
One of the most picturesque seaside areas in the region, the Costa Viola, in the province of Reggio Calabria, is the sunset-kissed stretch of the Lower Tyrrhenian Sea along which the prized vineyards are cultivated, giving rise to the Costa Viola PGI wine of the same name and the other Calabrian branded wines bearing the Costa Viola label.
The coastline that runs from Palmi to Reggio Calabria, between the mirages of the Strait of Messina, has several landscape and food and wine peculiarities. One of these is the presence of the purple seaweed that, projecting its shades on the surface of the sea, gives its name to the entire coastline.
This is where the prized grapes of 4 Calabrian PGI (Typical Geographical Indication) wines ripen. Let's taste them together, discovering the area's attractions in a short wine tourism itinerary.
Calabria's Costa Viola PGI wines
Thanks to the care and passion of wine producers in Reggio Calabria, the Costa Viola villages boast the following PGI s: Calabria (spread throughout the region), Arghillà, Costa Viola and Scilla.
Let us start with the wine that inherits the place name and colour of this land, the Costa Viola PGI. This is a wine in the white, red, rosé and novello varieties, whose production area falls mainly in the municipalities of Palmi, Seminara, Bagnara Calabra and Scilla.

Scilla in turn boasts a local brand, the Scilla PGI wine, which is distinguished by the absence of white and comes from black grapes selected within the municipal perimeter. It is a wine with an intense, fruity colour and flavour.
The same types for the Arghillà PGI wine, which takes its label from the district of the same name in the city of Reggio Calabria but also extends its area of origin to the municipalities of Calanna, Campo Calabro, Fiumara and Villa San Giovanni.
Calabria PGI wines, spread throughout the region, absorb along the Costa Viola the typical characteristics of the soil and the particular microclimate.
