Weekend among the Terre di Cosenza PDO vineyards
The journey to discover the renowned Cosenza wines takes us in the footsteps of the Terre di Cosenza Consortium, to discover the places and grape varieties that make this area a reference point for wine tourism in Calabria.
The Terre di Cosenza PDO denomination is relatively recent. Established at the end of 2011 to highlight a phase of rebirth and development of wine production in Calabria and Cosenza, today it is a guarantee of quality for a prized and nationally and internationally awarded sector.
Terre di Cosenza PDO wines
The Terre di Cosenza PDO denomination includes the entire province of Cosenza, within which 7 specific sub-zones have been identified, characterised by the production of particularly fine wines. These are the towns and hamlets of Condoleo, Donnici, Esaro, Pollino, San Vito di Luzzi, Colline del Crati and Verbicaro.

The Terre di Cosenza PDO includes a wide range of wines, from whites to reds and rosés, also produced in the spumante, passito, riserva and late harvest variants. Each of the Terre di Cosenza wines are made from grapes from vineyards that strictly comply with the production specifications, i.e: a 60% percentage of Magliocco for the red, passito, late harvest and novello; for the rosé, Greco Nero and/or Magliocco, Gaglioppo, Aglianico, Calabrese (minimum 60%) are used; while for the white, passito and late harvest a minimum of 60% of grapes from Greco Bianco and/or Guarnaccia Bianca, Pecorello and Montonico is required.
As is often the case, the Terre di Cosenza PDO regulations recognise the growing importance of wines made from national and international, non-native grapes, allowing the use of 15 distinct varieties (including pure types), most of which use Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
Itinerary through the Cosenza vineyards
The Terre di Cosenza wine itineraries have a well-defined circuit, passing through the natural beauty of 2 national parks, Pollino and Sila, historic villages and towns of authentic charm, as well as a visit to the "Bruzia capital" par excellence.
