Collegiate Church of the Assumption (Mother Church)

The Mother Church or Church of the Assumption dates back to the 13th century. Built with large blocks of tuffaceous granite, it stands out for its imposing bell tower (43 metres high compared to the original 47) with eight single lancet windows on the third and fourth floors and a pyramidal spire covered in majolica. The façade features a rose window and a large portal in Romanesque style. The granite staircase leads to the 15th-century portal. The interior, with a single nave, was largely rebuilt in the 18th century and features ten side arches corresponding to chapels, all decorated with Baroque-style stucco work. The church houses remarkable works of art including statues, relics, paintings and frescoes in 18th-century Baroque style and a remarkable wooden arabesque ceiling with 15th-century paintings. In the 16th-century chapel adjoining the sacristy, it is possible to visit the small Antiquarium Diocesan Museum, which houses numerous works of sacred art.
