Church of Santa Maria d'Episcopio

The Church of Santa Maria d'Episcopio, better known as Madonna del Carmine in honour of the patron saint of Scalea, is rich in monuments and works of art. The first nucleus of the church dates back to the 8th century, under the rule of Basilian monks. In Norman times, the church was enlarged and entrusted to the Benedictines of Cava de' Tirreni. Attacked by Saracen pirates under Dragut Pasha, in the 16th century it suffered damage and subsequent reconstruction until its current appearance, which is 18th century.
