Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta
The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta is the main place of worship in the city of Mileto.
The church is in Romanesque style, with three bronze entrance doors representing the nativity, crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The interior is in the shape of a Latin cross, with three naves divided by two orders of six columns. The nave has a wooden coffered ceiling with the painting of the Assumption of the Virgin into Heaven attributed to the painter Giuseppe Naso in the centre of the presbytery. In the left aisle is the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament, frescoed by the Calabrian artist Grillo, with a marble altar with polychrome inlays and the Sacred Heart with a crown of angels in the centre. A marble statue from 1549 with the effigy of St Nicholas of Bari, the patron saint of Mileto, dominates the right aisle.
