Capuchin Convent

The Convent of the Capuchin Franciscan Fathers is one of the largest religious buildings in the area, founded by Father Giacomo da Soverato around 1576 at the request of the population. The structure was built according to the poor Capuchin form. The Convent and the adjoining Church dedicated to the Sacred Heart, stand on the small hill at the foot of the town just outside the town centre. Its characteristic position opens a charming panoramic window on the wide valley that stretches to the Ionian Sea.

The motifs adorning the entire Gothic-style façade with its splendid rose window are beautiful, as are the four windows supported by two small columns on an artistic sill. Worthy of note are the wooden pulpit from 1904 inside the Convent Church and some wall paintings.

The Convent has a valuable library with over 10,000 scientific-historical-literary and theological-biblical volumes inside, as well as a unique Museum of Peasant and Artisan Civilisation, which offers significant evidence of local life, culture and art.
