Clementine di Calabria PGI

PGI

The Clementine di Calabria PGI (Clementines of Calabria) is a citrus fruit born from bud mutations; it is actually a hybrid between bitter oranges and mandarins. There are several varieties: Spinoso, SRA 63, Comune, Hernandina, Fedele, Tardivo, Marisol and “di Nules”.

The production areas of the PGI product are focused on the lowlands of the region and cover more than 60 municipalities in all five provinces.

The lands where PGI Clementines are cultivated must be registered in the appropriate Register and must have these characteristics: medium-textured soil, a maximum of 1,200 plants per hectare and "full crowned" cultivation. Due to the region's mild climate, citrus fruits ripen very early, as early as the beginning of October, which is why the fruit harvest starts in October and lasts until January.

Calabrian PGI Clementines are dark orange and have a spherical shape, slightly flattened at the ends.

The finished product can be consumed in its natural state as well as processed (sorbets, jams, juices) and not only in the culinary but also in the cosmetics industry.
